Gabion retaining walls are mass gravity structures that are often used
because of their economic, functional, and aesthetic characteristics. These characteristics combined
with other advantages, such as their flexibility and permeability, make them a good alternative to
other types of retaining structures. Gabions are commonly used for a variety of applications that
include: roadway retaining wall structures (for both embankments above and below the roadway);
retaining structures for railways; parking structures; land development projects; landscaping; and
seashore protection.
Another type of retaining structure that provides the same advantages as a gabion wall is
the Terramesh® System. Terramesh® and Green
Terramesh® are mechanically stabilized earth structures that provide the strength and
flexibility of a gabion retaining wall with either a gabion or vegetative front facing. The
double twist woven steel wire mesh panels take advantage of not only the
friction on the surface of the wire, but more importantly, the mechanical interlocking properties of
the backfill as well.
