It is sometimes appropriate to upgrade channel linings by adding a groin structure that
can be incorporated into the main body of the longitudinal protective work or firmly anchored
to a foundation. In either case their function is to keep at a distance the more vigorous
currents which could over-stress the main protective structure.
It is a known fact that scouring phenomena can occur at the head of groins. It is
appropriate to widen the foundation apron of the protective structure near the groins. The
unit construction of gabion baskets makes it easy to modify the original groin structure to
suit varying parameters of the water course.
