Maccaferri Soil Nailing is a technique that can be used for either remedial measure for unstable natural soil slopes or for steepening new or existing soil slopes. In soil nailing, the slope is reinforced by the insertion of reinforcing steel bars.

Anchors are installed using drilling techniques and are usually fully grouted and installed with regular spacing across the slope face for a soil nailing solution. The facing stability can be achieved by using a rigid concrete revetment, often a shotcrete technique, or a flexible reinforcing mesh may be used to stabilize the soil between the steel plates.

Maccaferri's rockfall mitigation and erosion protection systems can provide solutions for the local surface stability including:

“Stiff” flexible systems (double twisted wire mesh, HEA panels, SteelGrid^® HR or MacMat^® R)

The facing revetment covers the exposed face of the reinforced soil and provides a stabilizing function to retain the ground between the soil nails, providing erosion protection and/or having an aesthetic function.

Usually the facing stabilization system provides stability while establishing vegetation; the soil nailing system improves the shear strength of the soil, providing surface erosion protection.
