Rockfall Embankments

Rockfall Embankment protection is used to stop rockfall and debris from falling onto roads and railways or where there is possible loss of property or life. Maccaferri rockfall embankments are made of pre-assembled products like Green Terramesh®, Terramesh®, gabions or a combination of them.

This passive system is an ideal solution when it is not possible to intercept falling rocks or prevent them from detaching, due to the slope being too large, or inaccessible.
These days, embankments are made with mechanically reinforced earth systems, enabling builders to use local material, reduce the footprint of the structure, and create a vegetated embankment face, which minimizes the system's environmental impact.

Maccaferri Terramesh® solves many of these situations, in which system effectiveness goes hand-in-hand with rapid construction time. The double-twist mesh fascia unit and soil reinforcement structural element are pre-assembled during the manufacturing process, thereby dramatically reducing the number of operations performed on site.

Features and Benefits of Maccaferri Rockfall Embankments:
  • They are used for very high energy absorption impact up to 20,000KJ.
  • The wire mesh that composes the reinforcement has been evaluated for 75 years durability by HITEC with the collaboration of AASHTO and FHWA.
  • The continuous mesh that forms the facing element and the reinforcement section allows for a perfect integration by minimizing the possibility of failure of the facing.
  • The maintenance cost of the system is minimal compared to other types of high energy barriers.
