Rockfall Protection

Typical Considerations
You want color? You got it!

Due to space constraints in this congested world, there are times when development takes place in areas that previously would not have been selected for infrastructure or building.

The continuous erosion of slopes and rockfaces may expose transportation and other facilities to the hazards of falling debris. This debris can range from small particles to boulders weighing many tons.

Maccaferri is able to offer rockfall mitigation solutions to suit many applications.

One of the main methods of rockfall mitigation is known as Active restraint. The unstable slope face is completely coated by our double twist wire mesh Rockfall netting - known as 'drapery'.

The mesh is designed to control the descent of a falling rock, guiding it harmlessly to the foot of the slope.

Where the designer requires a more robust protection mesh, we can offer a high strength steel cable mesh. This is often installed over the double twist mesh to compliment it; The steel cable mesh offers the strength to retain large boulders, and the double twist mesh offers protection from smaller pieces of debris.

Typical considerations

  • A typical installation would include a high strength steel cable, installed along the crest of the unstable slope. The cable would be secured to the slope crest with rock bolts / ground anchors (designed and detailed as appropriate)
  • Consider the cable like a curtain rod, from which we will hang (or 'drape') the rockfall netting
  • Over time, rocks and debris will fall to the foot of the slope behind the steel mesh drapery. Rocks can then be collected in a trench of suitable dimensions, at the foot of the slope.
  • If desired, the mesh can be secured at the foot of the slope by a similar cable to that at the top of the slope. In this instance it is good practice to allow the lower cable to be loosened, in order that the collected debris can be removed safely.

The double twist mesh is an ideal material for this application. Testing has revealed that if a wire strand is broken due to impact or damage, the mesh will not unravel, or unzip as stresses in the mesh can be transferred in more than one direction. This capability is only available with double twist mesh.

You want color? You got it!

We are now able to offer our PVC coated double twist steel mesh in a wide variety of colors!

For larger projects, we have even mixed-and-matched the colored PVC coated wire to produce a "camouflage" effect. This is very popular in areas where aesthetics are important, and the visual impact is minimized. People driving past do not even realize it is there and protecting them from harm!

We can match the color of the PVC coating to suit the on-site conditions to meet aesthetics. Our repertoire includes Arizona Sand and Colorado Brown.
