Military and Emergency
Works
Military
Maccaferri has a long history of working with many armed
forces throughout the world in the following application areas,
- Temporary access reinforcement
- Hard points for fixed weapons
- Bunkers and barriers
- Blast and Ballistic protection
- Erosion Control
- Fencing systems
Due to their modular nature, gabions can be used to construct
semi-permanent or permanent structures for a wide range of
military installations. They are rapid to install, requiring
relatively unskilled labor. They are flexible, robust and
can be amended on site to suit local conditions.
Our Flexmesh® is used to provide access across poor ground
conditions. Supplied in a rolled form, Flexmesh® is deployed
quickly, enabling military traffic to advance over soft terrain
which would otherwise hinder progress.

Emergency Works
Emergencies come in many shapes and sizes! Maccaferri has
experience in the mitigation of flood and fire conditions.

Flood
Gabions and Sack gabions are used extensively in temporary
works situations to provide structural and erosion resistance
to channels and infrastructure. Sack gabions are filled elsewhere,
before lifting into place as required. Their flexibility allows
them to be stacked onto one another, and conform to uneven
topography.
Once the flood conditions have subsided, vegetation may have
been stripped from channels and embankments. Our erosion control
blankets and mats can be used to provide immediate erosion
protection, and a stable environment to re-establish vegetation.

Fire
Maccaferri has worked with many BAER (Burned Area Emergency
Remediation) teams to provide erosion protection solutions.
Once vegetation has been burned during a forest fire, there
is often very little vegetation left to hold/bind the ground
surface together. Therefore, the surface is very fragile and
susceptible to erosion. If erosion does occur, soils in the
run-off water can pollute local watercourses, harming wildlife.
Our solutions;
- Our permanent (manmade) and temporary (biodegradable)
RECPs are used to protect freshly burned areas against erosion
by wind and rain. The mats provide immediate erosion control
and a stable medium in which to re-establish vegetation.
- The RECPs also provide a stable medium into which seeding
(aerial, hand or hydro) can be sown.
- Gabion units are used as debris screens within water
courses.
- Gabions are also used as grade stabilizers. These are
simple drop structures which reduce the local gradient of
the slope, slowing the channel flow. Locally available rock
can often be used to fill gabions and mattresses.
- Gabions and Reno mattresses have been used in debris basins.
These basins are constructed to trap and hold debris and
sediment.
- Our MacTex® Geotextiles can be used as silt fences,
and provide separation and filtration for many applications.
