Bridge Abutments

Gabions combine solid structural support with good permeability, which makes them an excellent alternative for abutment slope protection. The flexibility of gabions provides excellent protection against bridge scour, preventing the footings of abutments or columns from becoming exposed and weakening the integrity of the structure.

Gabions are frequently used as an alternative to slope paving for both economic and aesthetic reasons. This is mainly because gabions can incorporate vegetation into the surface of the lining, so they can offer a completely vegetated surface combined with added structural support.

An additional advantage to using gabions as an alternative to concrete slope paving is that gabions are resistant to grafitti, saving on long term maintenance costs.
